Thanksgiving, Island style

The Island Community Center annual Thanksgiving dinner meal included turkey, stuffing, squash, potato, gravy, carrots, peas, cranberry sauce, butter and olives. An additional helping of sweet breads, a biscuit and a cookie was added, as well as a slice of pie to top off the meal. The only thing missing was Grandma’s best china. The dinner was a team effort between ICC board trustee Leslie Rice, volunteer Danielle Thompson and the ICC, who assembled and distributed 45 warm dinners to individuals or families on the Island who may not have had a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner otherwise. The dinner, which has been held for six years, was previously made in the kitchen of Sylvia Tate. Another annual holiday meal is held at the Island Nursing Home, who throw a big, traditional Thanksgiving dinner for residents and their family members on Thanksgiving day. “We always prepare a really good meal—turkey and all the fixings, and mincemeat pies, cream pies. Mincemeat pies were the favorite, but pumpkin was close,” said Becky Seibert, director of Residential Care.
