Surf’s up, power’s down
Gene Nelson of the Deer Isle Fire Department helps direct traffic around a low-hanging power line on Friday morning. More than 10,000 Bangor Hydro Electric customers lost power over the course of the day, including many in Deer Isle and Stonington. In more remote places on the Island power was out into the following day.

Winds gusting to 50 mph brought the surf up at Sand Beach in Stonington the afternoon of Friday, January 31. An afternoon high tide combined with the extreme winds produced some spectacular waves on an otherwise quiet beach.
