Island honors those who served

The Island’s Memorial Day Observance held at the Deer Isle Congregational Church on May 28 marked the 150th anniversary of the day it was first observed. In an hour-long event that focused on World War I, veterans Ron Dahlen, Lee Fay, Fred Whitford and Richard Eaton delivered remarks to the audience while members of the Deer Isle Stonington Elementary and High School Band provided music. World War I ended in 1918, and islanders played a role. The observance concluded with a list of fallen heroes from Deer Isle and Stonington.
