Stonington native Dominic Leali—born in 1917—was presented with Castine’s gold-headed cane as the town’s oldest citizen on August 6. Chairman of Selectmen Gus Basil (standing in photo) asked Leali if he’d worked in the stone-cutting trade in Stonington. Leali responded promptly that he had. Leali moved to Castine in 1969, worked for 22 years at Maine Maritime Academy, and built the off-neck house where he lives today. Basile handed Leali the ebony cane with its elaborate gold head and told him he could keep the laudatory certificate but the cane would remain on the wall in Emerson Hall. Seated, from left, are Leali and daughter Bernice Hathaway. Also present was granddaughter-in-law Mary McCarthy and son-in-law John Hathaway.
