PTA sponsors school clean-up, school-supply drive

by Jessica Brophy

As the start of school approaches, the Deer Isle-Stonington Parent Teacher Association is calling on local residents to support the schools.

First is a school clean-up to be held on Sunday, August 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. Volunteers will fix up the gardens, paint, sweep and more, said PTA President Deena Staples. Interested volunteers can sign up for specific jobs via a link on the PTA’s Facebook page, or call Staples at 348-2456.

Second is a school-supply drive through the month of August. Drop-off boxes will be available at the island branches of Camden National Bank and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.

Teachers have given Staples lists of needed supplies, some of which are listed below. For a full list, call Staples at

348-2456 or email her at threexsblessed@gmail.com. />

Some of the requested supplies include: low-odor dry erase markers, three-ring binders, Band-Aids, modeling clay, colored index cards, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, Tempera paint in basic colors, paper, crayons, scissors, pencil boxes, rulers, grading pens, markers and board games for inside recess.

The PTA holds its next meeting on Thursday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the office of Karen Atwell in the former Stonington Elementary School.
