A healthy turnout attended WinterFest this year, according to Healthy Island Project president Kathleen Osborn.

WinterFest activities stretched the whole weekend—from Friday night’s three-course meal served by Island Culinary and Ecological Center to Saturday’s full schedule and Sunday’s four-on-four basketball tournament.

Saturday’s events at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School included a cribbage tournament, balloon animals, food, tours of a fire truck and an ambulance, igloo building, visits with animals, including Birdsacre owls, and live music.

“A sure sign that the Saturday activities at HIP’s annual WinterFest were a big success was the full parking lot at DISES,” said Osborn.

Saturday night, two firepits attempted to keep WinterFest attendees warm, with hot dogs, marshmallows and hot cocoa to help.

Clear skies and cold temperatures helped make the fireworks a success, said Osborn, who said the event “lit up the beautiful winter sky.” The fireworks were followed by a family dance at the Opera House.

Bennett Gray upset last year’s winner, Gleason Gray, to become the 2012 Winterfest cribbage champ.

The pet photo contest winners were Genevieve Kurilec, who won both Best Dog and Best Cat, and Meryl Freeman, who won Best Other Pet.

Bennett Gray, Justin Boyce, Jay Boyce and Mario Bartlett won the four-on-four basketball tournament at the Island Community Center on Sunday in what Osborn called a “great turnout and a very high level of competition.”
