Olsen announces resignation from school board

by Jessica Brophy

At the Tuesday, June 5, monthly CSD board meeting, board member Virginia Olsen told the board she plans to resign when the budget process is complete. Olsen cited time commitments as the reason for her resignation.

As Olsen is a Stonington resident, her replacement will be appointed by the Stonington selectmen. Town Manager Kathleen Billings-Pezaris said the selectmen are likely to appoint someone within the next few weeks. Any Stonington resident interested in serving should let a selectman or Billings-Pezaris know. The replacement would serve until next year’s town meeting elections.

In other business, Elizabeth Kyzer was hired 5-0 as the K-12 music teacher, according to meeting minutes. Board member Stephen York said there were two outstanding candidates for the position.

Mary Penfold was hired as high school math teacher, 5-0. Principal Todd West said there were three excellent candidates for the position.

Dorothy Conte, Heather Hill-Ford, Donna Foster, Jillian Tripp, Amy VanDorn and Lori Thompson were hired as special education summer staff 5-0. Special Services Director Josh Nichols reported the summer school helps students retain skills they have learned.

The board approved a request to allow the daughter of Peter and Tiffany Dauk to attend Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. Peter Dauk is employed in the school lunch program. The request was approved 5-0.

Stephen York requested that a task force be created to address the issue of multi-age classrooms, spurred by discussions during the budget process. The board tabled the discussion until July, 5-0.

Technical education teacher Dennis Saindon and science teacher Cindi Heanssler presented on the applied physics class’ energy bike project.
