Fuel sales on Fish Pier earn almost $23,000

The major part of the October 15 Stonington Selectmen’s meeting was devoted to the Harbor Committee and the Fish Pier. The news was good. Since January, 225,000 gallons of fuel have been purchased at the pier, yielding a gross profit of just under $23,000 to date.

Two bids for supplying the fuel were opened, one from Heanssler Oil and one from Eaton Oil, and Heanssler got the bid, at $3.54 per gallon, four cents less than Eaton. In either case, the bid was tank price on the day of the bid; it is not fixed for the year. Town Manager Kathleen Billings-Pezaris expressed concern that Heanssler was unwilling to deliver on Sundays, but Selectman Richard Larrabee said “they can make two deliveries on Saturday,” and that suggestion sealed the deal.

The pier charges an additional 10 cents per gallon although there had been a rejected motion at the Harbor Committee meeting to lower the pier’s portion. Selectman Evelyn Duncan said those figures would have to be looked at anyway, since they didn’t include associated costs, like the labor connected with the computer tracking of the sales and incidental maintenance.

While they discussed the fuel, Duncan suggested that the fuel storage tank needed a gauge, and that Heanssler said he could get one for about $300. The selectmen voted to purchase the gauge.

They also voted to purchase an additional electric hydraulic system to provide separate power for two hoists which have been sharing one system, at a cost not to exceed $2,857, which was one quote.

The town has won a matching grant of $50,000 from the Department of Transportation for work at the Hagen Dock. Replacement of the floats, some of which are 20 years old, is high on the list of uses for the money. The timber pilings also need attention. The consensus among the selectmen was to see how much everything was going to cost and do what needed most to be done.

In other business the selectmen discussed two town jobs; Animal Control Officer Ryan Kunkle has resigned because of a work conflict, and Jeremy Fields has been hired as a fill-in at the Transfer Station at a wage of $13 an hour. An ad will be put in the newspaper for a replacement ACO.
