Special events scheduled at Stonington Opera House

The statewide kickoff for The Maine Poetry Express, a new celebration of Maine poetry by Maine poet laureate Wesley McNair, opens a full weekend of special events at the Stonington Opera House to coincide with the Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce’s first Local Foods Festival Weekend, on Friday, September 28, at 7 p.m., according to a news release.

The Maine Poetry Express will be followed by P.S., I Love Music, a special evening with Paul Sullivan and his musical friends, Saturday, September 29; and two screenings featuring Maine filmmaker Cecily Pingree of Betting the Farm, a documentary on the founding of Maine’s Own Organic milk company, on Sunday, September 30, at 5 and 7 p.m.

The Opera House is the first stop for The Maine Poetry Express, the launch of a statewide program designed by poet laureate Wesley McNair to increase the visibility of Maine poetry with those who may think poetry is not for them.

The Maine Poetry Express, sponsored in cooperation with the Maine Publishers & Writers Alliance, at the Stonington Opera House will feature three local poets as well as five citizens reading poems they’ve selected from Maine poetry anthologies provided by McNair. The evening’s featured poets are Deborah Cummins (Counting the Waves, Beyond the Reach), Stuart Kestenbaum (House of Thanksgiving, Prayers & Run-on Sentences) and Thomas Moore (The Bolt Cutters). Citizen readers will include Lew Ellis, third selectman for Deer Isle, Clare Grindal, long-time local educator and author of the fisheries column for Penobscot Bay Press, Garrett Aldrich, captain of the Isle au Haut mail boat, and others to be announced.

Admission for the evening is by free will donation.

Grammy Award-winning musician, pianist and composer Paul Sullivan returns to the Opera House on Saturday, September 29, with his second PS, I Love Music presentation for 2012. An original production created in partnership with Opera House Arts, PS, I Love Music features Paul in conversation and playing with some of his famous musical friends from around the country as well as Maine. The September 29 event will feature special guests Con Fullam, Mary Cheyney Gould and Garrett Hale.

Tickets for PS, I Love Music may be purchased in advance on the Opera House Arts website, operahousearts.org, or by calling 367-2788.

On Sunday, September 30, Opera House Arts welcomes Maine filmmaker Cecily Pingree and her documentary, Betting the Farm. Ms. Pingree will attend the 7 pm screening and conduct a Talk Back after the show.
