Former bus driver arrested on bail violation charge

by Jessica Brophy

A Deer Isle man arrested and accused of multiple counts of gross sexual assault against a minor in December of 2012 was arrested again on January 22 for allegedly violating the conditions of his bail.

Larry Bunt of Deer Isle was released on bail after his arrest in December under the condition he have no contact with any children under the age of 16. According to an affidavit from the Maine State Police, a school resource officer for Bucksport High School reported that a 14-year-old girl had received a “friend request” on Facebook from Bunt.

After an investigation by state police, Bunt was found to be “friends” with at least five other “grade-school aged” children, the affidavit states.

Bunt was formerly employed as a bus driver by First Student, which provides contracted bus service to the Deer Isle-Stonington school system. He was released on bail on January 23 after the second arrest. The new bail conditions include $500 in cash, no contact with the 14-year-old whom he reportedly tried to befriend on Facebook and no Internet access.

Bunt’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 21.
