Plans in place for Wings, Waves & Woods

by Kelly Kolysher

The final plan of events for this year’s Wings, Waves & Woods birding weekend is finished! There will be a new walk on Marshall Island, a new Saturday dinner at the Harbor Café followed by a slide show/talk at the Stonington Town Hall. The Friday night opening gallery show and registration will be held this year at DIAA. This weekend is for families, beginners and those avid birders looking to add to their Life Lists. Please join us for any or all of the activities! The schedule of events will be posted shortly on the Chamber’s website deerisle.com.

The Lupine Festival is not scheduled this year because no one has volunteered to run it.

Balancing our Budget: Who isn’t tired of hearing about budget cuts? Luckily, our Chamber Board members are friendly and cooperative business people, which goes a long way when it comes to making difficult decisions. Our bylaws require that we balance our budget in order to keep the Chamber financially sound. Unfortunately, the economy has taken a toll on many of our members which in turn has lowered our income this year.

The January 17 Board meeting addressed the issue of where to save money without diminishing the vital services we provide for our membership. Ranked in order of importance, those services are the website, the Island Guide, the Island Map and the Welcome Center.

The W.C. has always been a large item on the budget and this year’s forecast was no exception. It was determined that in order to stay within our budget, we will not open the Welcome Center Building this year. The kiosks will be maintained with members’ ads, the Island Guides & Maps will be in their normal boxes to be picked up by visitors and the large 2013 map will be installed. There will be no porta-pottie. We intend to open the Welcome Center in 2014, income permitting.
