Kumiega to chair the Marine Resources Committee
Rep. Walter Kumiega, D-Deer Isle, has been named House chairman of the Marine Resources Committee for the upcoming legislative session, according to a news release. Kumiega served on the committee during the 125th Legislature.
The committee oversees state policy relating to the Department of Marine Resources, commercial marine fisheries management, licensing and enforcement, aquaculture, and the processing and sale of marine fish and shellfish.
“I am very pleased to have been appointed Chair. Marine resource-related industries are the largest economic force in the communities I represent, and chairing the committee charged with the stewardship of those resources is a responsibility I am excited to take on,” said Kumiega.
Kumiega is serving his second-term and represents the towns of Brooklin, Deer Isle, Frenchboro, Isle au Haut, part of Mount Desert, North Haven, Stonington, Swan’s Island, Tremont, and Vinalhaven.
“Our fisheries need to be sustainably managed and the harvest needs to be processed and marketed in a way that maximizes economic gain for Maine,” said Kumiega. “I will work hard to accomplish these goals over the next two years.”
Kumiega was selected to chair the committee by Speaker of the House Mark Eves.
