Harbor Farm donates 100 wreaths to DIS Elementary School

by Jessica Brophy

Students in art teacher Shannon Westphal’s classes at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School had the chance to decorate wreaths, claiming most to bring home to share with families. Other decorated wreaths were sent to the Stonington Manor and Deer Run Apartments, bringing holiday cheer.

The wreaths—100 in all—were donated by Harbor Farm to the elementary school last month.

Owner Dick McWilliams said wreath manager Peggy Zembrusky suggested donating the wreaths to the school for children to decorate.

“We always have some surplus wreaths, said McWilliams. “Some are culled from our mailed wreaths and sometimes we just wind up with extra. The question is, what should we do with them? The answer this year was donate to the school,” said McWilliams.

“It was our first inclination, even before Newtown [Conn.],” said McWilliams. “But we thought, after that, it was important for kids to know that there are people in the community who care about them.”
