The Stonington Economic Development Committee (SEDC) invites all interested business owners to the fourth annual Business-Education Partnership Breakfast on Tuesday, March 19, at 8 a.m. on the second floor of the Stonington Town Hall, according to a news release. The morning will be structured as a conversation between business people and local school administrators, beginning with a round-robin update by business owners on their workforce needs and experiences. Simultaneously, the town and the SEDC are releasing a survey regarding issues impacting Stonington’s downtown. “This breakfast has become a great opportunity for business owners to discuss specific needs, interests, and concerns regarding local education, graduates, and labor requirements,” said Stonington Town Manager Kathleen Billings-Pezaris. “A lot of good activity, such as the job shadow day, has come from these breakfasts in the past.” Maine’s move to a proficiencies-based diploma and a standards-based educational system, in alignment with its adoption of the Common Core standards, are already triggering great changes in area schools. The breakfast offers local business people the opportunity to meet the new Union 76 Superintendent, Mark Jenkins, as well as the new Director of Adult Education, Heather Wren. Additionally, high school principal Todd West will provide a short overview of the new Marine Studies Pathway to launch next fall, and representatives from Ready by 21 will be on hand to answer questions about their programs. In conjunction with the breakfast, the SEDC and its Maine Downtown Network subcommittees are releasing a short new survey regarding business development and other uses of downtown Stonington. Paper copies will be available at the breakfast as well as many local outlets. The full survey can be accessed and filled out in less than five minutes by clicking this link:survey monkey.com/s/KRPY9J8. Reservations for the breakfast are not necessary but R.S.V.P.’s are welcome. To R.S.V.P. or for further information, email Town Manager Kathleen Billings-Pezaris at stoningtontown@roadrunner.com, or call the town office at 367-2351. |
