Area men cook up a storm at Seamark

by Jessica Brophy

At the ninth annual Men Who Cook event, held Saturday, March 9, more than 130 people came out to sample selections from 38 entrants.

The event serves as one of Seamark Community Art’s main fundraisers. Proceeds fund scholarships given to area graduates who plan to attend art school, and also scholarships to allow people in the Deer Isle-Stonington and Peninsula communities to attend workshops at Seamark.

“In Maine people are a little tired of winter at this point,” said event organizer Michelle Dur. “It was really wonderful, very relaxed and a great event.”

Those in attendance sampled dishes ranging from stews to pulled pork, salads to a wide range of desserts. Music was provided by Isle of Jazz.

The best overall was won with a German dish of sauerbraten and rotsi made by Doug Wilson with his team of Tom Kellogg and Griffith Kellogg.

Other winners included Rick Trundy’s lobster chowder for best savory dish, David Pelletier’s chocolate layered squares topped with whipped cream and strawberries, and Nathanial Curtis and Desmond Billings took best presentation for red velvet pancakes topped with cream cheese frosting and crumbled bacon.
