DISHS Annual budget meeting slated for May 28
Budget up 2.79 percent
by Jessica Brophy
On Tuesday, May 28, residents of Deer Isle and Stonington will have opportunity to vote on the 2013-14 school budget at the annual budget meeting, followed by a ballot referendum in each town on Tuesday, June 11. The budget meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the high school. Polling hours have not been established yet for the ballot referendum.
At its monthly meeting Tuesday, May 7, the CSD school board approved the budget to go before voters. The budget totals $6,796,786, a $184,307 or 2.79 percent increase over the current year’s budget.
Should voters approve the budget, the total local share will increase by $83,374, given an increase in expected state subsidy.
Board member Andy Vaughn asked Superintendent Mark Jenkins how long it will take to recoup the costs of remodeling part of the high school to house the central office. Jenkins said given the $15,000 to $20,000 per year costs incurred at the Sargentville location, he estimates it will take “well under 10 years” to fully recoup the costs of the central office renovation.
The board also heard lawn mowing bids. The bid for summer and fall was awarded to Terry Siebert at a rate of $27 per hour, with Siebert providing all equipment. The contract for the spring was awarded to Lori Hardy at a rate of $38 per hour, with Hardy providing all equipment. The board then authorized Jenkins to award mowing bids to whomever he saw fit, and only to ask the board on the issue if there were concerns.
The school calendar for 2013-14 was also approved. Board member Skip Greenlaw expressed displeasure with the calendar, saying he disliked the week-long vacation during Thanksgiving week. Jenkins explained that “sending” schools—those who send students to one of the state’s technical schools, such as Hancock County Technical Center—must not have more than five days that disagree with HCTC’s schedule, which limits the flexibility of the calendar.
The board unanimously approved second-year contracts to the following teachers: Brian Adams, Amber Allshouse, Elizabeth Kyzer, Deborah Ladd, Kimberly Astbury, Jillian Tripp and Mary Penfold. The board also unanimously approved first continuing contracts (third year) to Leslie Billings, Sandra Robinson, March Churchill, Shannon Westphal, Heather Hill-Ford and Cindi Heannsler.
School will start on Tuesday, September 3 and end on Friday, June 13.
The board will hold a second monthly meeting in May, featuring a presentation of the strategic plan, as well as several discussion items postponed from the May 7 meeting.
