Breast cancer support group available in Deer Isle
by Jessica Brophy
A new support group is available to those in the area battling breast cancer.
Nancy Greene, who has breast cancer, said she has worked with Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center located in Ellsworth and Caring Connections, a nonprofit out of Bangor, to organize the breast cancer support group.
The group meets the first and third Mondays of each month at St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church in Deer Isle from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
The group is meant to be a gathering focused on those battling breast cancer, and not caregivers, said Greene. Greene wanted to found the group because she herself has been so well supported by her family, friends and the community.
“I wouldn’t wish for it, but it hasn’t been terrible,” said Greene. “I think of the people who may not have that kind of support.”
Greene said it’s also nice to have other people who are going through it to talk to. “Some medications can cause hair loss or hot flashes,” she said. “It’s nice to hear someone else say ‘oh yes, I had that problem,’ so you know you’re not alone.” Other issues, like dealing with a mastectomy, reconstruction and others are good to speak about as well, said Greene. “Sometimes you hear things better from other people than from doctors,” said Greene.
The space at St. Brendan’s is a conference room, said Greene. People are welcome to bring lunch, or make tea.
