For the third year, turkeys and funds will be raised to help needy area families eat well during the holidays.
Leslie McDonald-Rice and Danielle Thompson started the fundraising effort to support the Island Food Pantry.
The third annual Feed Our Community Holiday Food Drive will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive will be held in the parking lots of Burnt Cove Market and The Galley on that day. Donations of turkeys and $10 donations toward turkeys will be accepted.
This year, for the first time, donations of other nonperishable items will be accepted.
The first year, 200 turkeys or $10 donations toward turkeys were gathered in more than 12 hours. Last year, more than 300 turkeys or $10 donations were collected in less than six hours.
The pantry is able to purchase food through the Good Shepherd Food Bank for as little as 16 cents a pound.
McDonald-Rice said it would be great to hit 400 this year, but is just looking forward to seeing the generosity of fellow islanders.
“It feels good to help out, and everyone seems to be in a giving mood this time of year,” said McDonald-Rice.
This year, anyone who donates a turkey or $10 toward a turkey will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the Factory Tavern, donated by the restaurant.
The restaurant will also be accepting donations toward the turkey drive up until the event.
