Although we weren’t able to field a golf team this fall, Ethan Shepard, a freshman who plays goalie for the soccer team, was able to go to the PVC Championship Qualifier last week. He shot a 77, which was the second best round overall and the medalist in Class C. This qualifies him to compete in the State Championship tournament later this month. This is the second year in a row that we have had the medalist for the Class C tournament.
The girls soccer team lost a tough game to George Stevens 2-0. This was a very evenly played game that we played well in, only to give up two goals in the last 15 minutes of the game. Coach Sarah Ebel said the GSA coach complimented our girls, saying she was impressed with how well we played, and was not expecting that level of competition based on looking at our record.
The shot statistics tell the tale as we saved 8 of 10 GSA shots, and GSA saved 7 of our 7 shots. We played hard all game. Similar to the Sumner game, we are playing well against solid Class C contenders.
The girls lost a game to Penobscot Valley under the lights at Maine Maritime Academy. This is a college size field on artificial turf. The ball moves quicker on the turf, and we have not played under the lights before. We did well to keep up the pace in the first half and trailed only 2-0 at the half.
We gave a good effort in the second half but PVHS was able to capitalize on some well executed corner kicks and direct kicks to bolster their lead. We saved 14 of their 24 shots, and they saved 4 of our 4 shots.
The girls lost to Bangor Christian 2-0. For whatever reason, we came out flat and BC was able to score a goal within a minute and another one in the first 15 minutes. We had numerous opportunities , but we couldn’t get it done. Coach Ebel felt we let this one get away.
We did generate many offensive chances but couldn’t get a shot in the net. Goalie Logan Eaton saved 7 of the 10 BC shots and BC saved 9 of our 14 shots. We need to stay focused from the start and get the job done so we can taste the playoffs again this year.
The boys soccer team lost to Bangor Christian 6-0. BC is an elite, senior laden team with many members from their State Championship team of last year. BC was able to score a couple goals early and put our backs against the wall, though we worked hard to try and keep up with them. We saved 25 of their 32 shots, and they saved 5 of our 5 shots.
The boys lost to Penobscot Valley 6-0 on the Maine Maritime field. We started well and had several quality opportunities to score. Despite the quickness of PVHS on the bigger field, we only trailed 2-0 at the half.
When we did generate some good offensive chances, we were stymied by the excellent play of the PVHS goalie. With both Ethan Shepard and Hayden Torrey in goal, we saved 10 of their 25 shots and they saved 11 of our 12 shots. Coach Bennett Morey felt we would be very competitive with PVHS on a normal high school sized field where our small numbers would give us a better chance to contain their offense.
The girls are 1-7 and need to come together to move up in the standings. One more win and we could get to the postseason level in the standings. We have come so close in several of the last few games. We are making the effort and the newer players are learning how to work with the veterans.
The boys at 2-6 are in eleventh place (the top 15 make the playoffs) and went through a tough stretch last week. We are not at the level to play the elite teams and be competitive yet. We have improved vastly and are helped more by playing teams we match up with like the two games this week. We need to focus on playing our style as best we can if we are to keep our position in the standings and get into the post season.
