Hancock County Food drive helps to restock pantry shelves

The third annual Hancock County Food Drive collected more than 10,600 items during the month-long event, according to a news release from the Washington Hancock Community Agency.

The United Way of Eastern Maine and the Maine Community Foundation pledged to match $1 for every item up to $10,000, and that goal was met. An anonymous donor pledged an additional $500, and a donor from the Broad Reach Fund of the Maine Community Foundation is giving $5,000 earmarked for personal hygiene items.

The food drive was a joint effort by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Healthy Acadia, Washington Hancock Community Agency, United Way of Eastern Maine and the Maine Community Foundation, as well as food pantries, businesses, churches, schools and civic organizations. The items collected during the food drive will help restock pantry shelves and provide meals to people throughout Hancock County.
