Deer Isle-Stonington chess champions recognized at State House

Deer Isle-Stonington honored for chess skills

Rep. Walter Kumiega, D-Deer Isle, recently welcomed the Deer Isle-Stonington K-6 novice and the K-3 chess teams to the State House to receive congratulations from the Maine House and Senate on winning the 2014 Maine Scholastic Team Chess Championships in their respective categories.

This is the fifth year in a row that the K-6 team has won this title, according to a news release from the Maine Legislature.

The Legislature also honored the teams’ coach, Dick Powell of Ellsworth, who is retiring after 28 years of coaching. Powell, who taught French and Spanish from 1977 until his retirement in 2005, began the school’s successful chess program, which has amassed 39 state championships and participation in national tournaments under his leadership.

Members of the honored K-3 team include Sean Morey, Gavin L. Eaton, Macey Brown, Gavin C. Eaton, Brayden Martin, Trace Brophy, Maya Brown and Owen Staples.

Members of the honored K-6 team include Thomas Thompson, McHenna Martin, Liam Bishop, Drew Wendell, Koby Nevells, Corbin Harriman, Coleman Brown, Dexter Brown and Nathalie Zanke.
