The Island Fishermen’s Wives Association and the Deer Isle-Stonington Parent-Teacher Fellowship are sponsoring a school supply drive until August 23.

The PTF has run the school supply drive before, and this year, IFWA decided to help as part of its 25th anniversary efforts to do something each month for the community.

“It seemed like a good idea,” said Liz Steele of IFWA. Steele said she has collected a lot of backpacks and other supplies already. “It’s been a huge response,” she said. Donations have come from all over the island, from Bangor and even Colorado.

“There’s a great need for backpacks, rulers, pens and pencils—anything like that,” said April Coombs of the PTF. Other items to be collected include paper, one-inch binders, iPad covers, folders, book covers, highlighters and new socks and underwear for children size 10 and under. Gently used sneakers, winter boots, hats and mittens are also accepted.

The donations will be split between the high school and the elementary school and distributed to students in need, with anything beyond given to teachers to be used throughout the year.

Donations can be dropped off at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, Camden National Bank, Maine Camp Outfitters, Suzy’s Scissor Shack or V&S Variety. Monetary donations can be made at Island Fishing Gear & NAPA Auto Parts.
