Postal service to hold meeting in Stonington to discuss hours of operation

Residents of Stonington are called to a meeting on August 19 to discuss the future of the West Main Street post office.
Earlier this summer all those with Stonington mailing addresses were sent a survey asking the community to make some choices that pertain to the facility. As the U.S. Postal Service executes its POSTPlan, a nationwide effort to “right-size” its postal operations, it is gathering public input ahead of decisions.
What the USPS was specifically looking for in regards to the Stonington Post Office, said Melissa Lohnes of USPS Corporate Communication soon after the surveys were mailed, was some direction on how best to structure the retail window service hours at the location. “This is an unusual situation,” she said. “Typically, offices selected for POSTPlan see a reduction in retail service window hours.”
This, she said, is not the case for the Stonington Post Office. “The survey gives customers an opportunity to share with us what six hours during the week would be most convenient for them to leverage the services” available at the post office.
The returned surveys will be compiled and shared with the community at a meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, at the post office.
