After 15 years as second selectman, Twyla Weed said on Monday, December 30, that she will not seek a sixth term.

Ronald B. Eaton, who lives on Sunshine Road, has taken out papers for second selectman, according to town clerk Becky Knowlton.

In a recent phone interview, Weed said the decision not to seek another term was “not easy.”

Weed said she has “loved the job” but thinks it is the right time to step down. She said she would consider returning to be a selectman for the town at a future date.

Lew Ellis, Deer Isle’s third selectman, said he understands Weed’s choice not to run, but said the transition to a new second selectman will be difficult.

“I’ve depended on her for a lot,” said Ellis.

In 2013, Weed ran for the office of first selectman against Neville Hardy, who has held the post for more than 40 years. Weed lost by eight votes, 235 to 227.

Nomination papers are due by January 17.
