Brown announces re-election bid

Percy L. Brown Jr. has announced his candidacy for re-election for Hancock County Commissioner in District II, which includes Bucksport, Verona Island, Dedham, Penobscot, Castine, Brooksville, Brooklin, Sedgwick, Deer Isle and Stonington. Brown, who is presently serving a third term, is the current chairman of the commission. He said in a press release that during these tough economic times, government needs to examine new ways to provide necessary county services and remain affordable. County government continuing to become more efficient while still providing quality services is essential.

During the past several years, the County Commissioners, through grants, have upgraded the electrical and lighting system, saving considerable electrical costs. The Hancock County complex oil-fired heating systems are currently being upgraded to fire propane. This project will pay for itself over the next several years in energy savings while reducing our carbon footprint, Brown stated.

Brown, who resides in Deer Isle, is vice president of Percy L. Brown & Son Inc. Plumbing and Heating. He has been active in local affairs having served on a number of local and state boards and committees. He is a Past Commander of Rodney Stinson American Legion Post #102 of Stonington. He also was a part-time deputy sheriff for Hancock County for 16 years. Brown serves on the Tri-county Workforce Investment Board, Advisory Board at Washington County Community College and the Maine Right To Know Advisory Committee in Augusta. Brown graduated from Deer Isle High School and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston and Southern Maine Technical Institute in Portland. He served in the Vietnam War in 1967-68 as a combat medic and was awarded the Purple Heart. Brown is a member of the Marine Lodge #122 of Deer Isle, Rising Star Lodge #4 of Penobscot and Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor.
