The girls basketball team lost to Bucksport 57-32. We really didn’t play that bad of a game until the fourth quarter where we just fell apart. We actually led the first quarter 10-8 and then fell back to trail 26-14 at the half. We came back a little to trail by 10 after three, 41-31. Then the offense went totally off track and we scored only 1 point in the fourth quarter to make it a lop-sided loss. Bucksport smothered Allyson Eaton with extra coverage, and she wasn’t able to score. Morgan Shepard had a good game with 15 points, Holli Boyce had 8, and Natalie Shepard had 5.
The girls lost to Shead 44-34 in another game where we didn’t show up in one quarter to make the difference. We trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, and then plagued by turnovers and missed shots, we got down 27-14 at the half. Coach Darren Eaton fired them up during halftime, and we came out pressing and with a lot of energy; by halfway through the third period, we had a 2-point lead.
Trailing 33-31 after three quarters, we couldn’t maintain that energy and lost our patience on offense, scoring only 3 points in the fourth quarter. We could have easily have had this game and we need to keep our focus all game long. Allyson Eaton led us with 21 points and Morgan Shepard had 7, shooting 5 of 7 from the free throw line.
The girls lost to Machias 56-41. Coach Eaton felt we played a better game than the score indicates as we were close until the end of the game. We trailed by 6 at the half and then 37-29 after three quarters. We played catch-up and just couldn’t get things back to even. The leading scorer for Machias had 23 points, 15 from the free throw line. Fouls and a few turnovers against the Machias pressure late sealed our fate. Allyson Eaton led us with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Whitney Brown 6 points, and Morgan Shepard 5 points.
The boys got a hard fought win at Bucksport 49-45. It was a close game most all the way, with Bucksport leading 29-26 at the half. We did not have Krisford Melanio for this game with an ankle injury. Coach Brian Billings felt we did a good job with help defense. Bucksport has some very tall players and we more than held our own with rebounds.
We stay focused in the fourth and stuck with our game plan, building a lead. We didn’t have turnovers and shot our foul shots well to preserve the win. Stuart Bray led us with 16, Jared Gove 12, Ethan Shepard stepped up with 11, and Lucas Oliver had 10, giving us a very balanced attack.
The boys lost a heartbreaker to Shead 52-48 in overtime. We worked the ball inside well and led after one quarter 14-8. We slacked off a bit and Shead beat us down court for some easy baskets, though we kept a 26-23 lead at the half. We held our own in the third, but faltered in the fourth to give up the lead. Turnovers and close misses on open shots had us down near the end of the game. Shead let us hang around by missing 3 one-and-ones, but we turned the ball over with seven seconds left and down three.
Krisford Melanio stole the ball and put up a three-pointer that went through the net as time expired. The crowd went wild and I thought we would have the momentum to pull out the win. We made 3 of 6 foul shots early in the overtime to lead 43-42, but it went down hill from there. We got away from our game plan and took a few ill advised shots while Shead made theirs down the stretch to eke out the win.
It’s a tough way to lose after such a good effort, but we had many missed opportunities. Lucas Oliver led us with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Stuart Bray had 13 points, 6 assists, and 15 rebounds, Jared Gove had 12 points, Krisford Melanio 5, and Ethan Shepard 4 points and 5 rebounds.
The boys lost to Machias 62-44. We played pretty close with Machias in the first half and only trailed 28-22 at the half. We had a rough third quarter and that sunk us as we scored only 3 points to trail 47-25 after three. That was too big a hole to climb out of against a good team. Stuart Bray led us with 9 points, Pat Duddy 8, Krisford Melanio and Lucas Oliver each with 6, and Ethan Shepard 5.
The girls are 1-11 and pretty much out of the playoff hunt. With our schedule, we still can sneak into the preliminary round with a couple wins. We have been almost there in several games, so it is not too big a stretch. However, we have to show up for all four quarters to do that. We have the talent and just need to stay focused and work together.
The boys are 6-7 and currently in 11th place. A couple close games would have put us in better position. When we play together focused on our game, we have been very effective. However, like the girls, we have to do it for all four quarters and that has been an issue. We need a couple quality wins to boost our confidence as well as our place in the standings.
Good luck to the cheerleaders as they go to Bangor and compete in the Eastern Maine Regional Competition this Saturday. The Class D competition will be held at the Cross Insurance Center at 9 a.m.
