Mariners softball team beats #2, #3, but loses to Limestone in Eastern regional championship

by Faith DeAmbrose

The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners softball team finished their post season play with a loss to Limestone June 17, but only after back-to-back wins in earlier games—making for a few Cinderella-style upsets in Class D play.

The girls, who were ranked #10 going into playoff competition, beat #7 Machias in the preliminaries 12-8 on June 10. They went on to beat the #2 school, Penobscot Valley, in the quarter finals June 12, with a score of 4-1.

Next, they faced #3 Washburn on June 16, beating them 10-7 in a semifinal delayed from June 14 by rain.

The Mariners took to the fields in Brewer on June 16 for the Eastern regional crown, facing off against #1 seed, Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics. The final score was 9-5.
