Deer Isle student qualifies for State Geographic Bee

Brendan Penfold, an eighth-grader at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, was notified by the National Geographic Society that he is a semifinalist eligible to compete in the Maine State Geographic Bee to be held in Farmington on Friday, April 4.

This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, according to a news release from National Geographic. Individuals who won the competition at the school level took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The society invited students with the top 100 scores in each state to compete at the state level.

State winners receive prizes and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee finals May 19-21.
