Grace Morey, a 15-year-old Deer Isle-Stonington High School sophomore who competed in the Miss Maine Teen USA pageant in Portland November 24 and 25, walked off stage with a fourth-place finish and the People’s Choice award. Morey won the People’s Choice award for gathering the most online votes among the 25 contestants. Online voting also served as a fundraiser for the Miss Pink Organization, supporting those undergoing breast cancer treatment and their families.

“I didn’t take the crown home Sunday night. No, I didn’t. But what I did take home was so much more fulfilling,” Morey said. “I gained incredible friendships, new top-notch resources, much more confidence, and so many beautiful memories that I’m certain will last me a lifetime.”

Pageant judges weighed athletic wear, evening gown wear and a contestant interview in deciding the winners. Morey’s name was called for the last 10 contestants and then the final five.

“I can very confidently say that I’ve never been so ecstatic to hear my name. From this point on, my memory is mostly a blur,” she said.

Morey, a cheerleader, gymnast, honor student and class president, also has an “extreme interest” in climate change and plans to study environmental science at the college level.

In the nearer future, she plans to compete in next year’s contest, she said, and expressed gratitude for the support from the island community and beyond that helped her win the People’s Choice award.

“That trophy belongs to not only me, but to us all,” she said. “I would’ve never been able to accomplish all that I did this weekend if it wasn’t for all of you. So, once again, thank you. I’m endlessly grateful.”

Mara Carpenter, 17, of Camden was crowned Miss Maine Teen USA.
