Deer Isle resident to discuss her magazine startup
As part of the Island Speaker Series of the Deer Isle/Sunset Congregational Church, local editor and publisher Lisa Schoonmaker will talk about how she conceived of Senior Hiker Magazine, how she got it up and running and its mission and vision. Her presentation will be at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, at the Sunset church.
Written by and for older hikers, the journal is now in 48 states, two Canadian provinces, Ireland, Norway and China, according to a news release.
The magazine features stories of hiking adventures, photography and artwork of the natural world, and environmental studies. Columns include practical guidelines for older hikers (Mountain Sense), descriptions of hikes in international locales (Exotic Hikes), and profiles of hiking groups around the country (Hard Corps).
“I began work on this in the fall of 2015 and our first issue appeared in June 2016. A whole community of older hikers is out there everywhere—next to you on the plane, in line at the store, on the street as well as on the trails,” Schoonmaker said. “They’re an active, high-spirited group with wide-ranging experience and the knowledge of a lifetime. What they share is a love of the outdoors, respect for the environment, and concern for our remaining wilderness. Senior Hiker, we hope, reflects their vision through thoughtful articles, beautiful imagery, and a humorous touch. It also issues a challenge to older people to continue to do the things they love, the things that have meaning to them.”
