From quirkiness to growth to a fundamental grasp of life and friendship, the 24 eighth graders promoted from Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School have it all, according to science and math teacher Mickie Flores.
Flores was the guest speaker at the promotional ceremony held at the Reach Performing Arts Center on June 15.
“I have learned from each of you, individually, having you in my classroom for the last three years,” said Flores.
Flores then, in alphabetical order, told each student what she had learned from them, and what she felt their greatest strengths were.
“I love you all,” she said when she had finished.
After awards were handed out from various teachers, the students went off the stage and into the crowd to watch a slideshow of photos, from baby days to their class trip.
A poem written by eighth grader Taylor Staples was read by her classmate Dexter Brown following the slideshow.
“So as we graduate today, we begin a new story, a new chapter, new beginning, a new chance for glory,” Brown read aloud from the poem.
