Fishermen’s Day marks 30 years for IFWA
by Faith DeAmbrose
This year not only were three fishermen recognized for their achievements and inducted into the Hall of Fame at Fishermen’s Day, but the organization that brings it to you—Island Fishermen’s Wives Association—had reason to recognize some of its own.
Suzy Shepard, Debbie Robbins, Jenni Steele, Su Oliver and Julia Trundy are founding members of the organization who have remained active for the last three decades. Each were recognized as part of the day’s events.
Shepard, who serves as the MC for Fishermen’s Day, also serves on the Steering Committee of the IFWA board.
Robbins helps coordinate the Pet Show every year and is the contact at the High School for scholarships. She has always helped decorate the Fishermen’s Memorial.
Steele has been the treasurer for almost 30 years and is currently on the board of the Fishermen’s Forum. She also coordinates safety classes.
Oliver is the face behind Suzy’s Red Hot Lobster and is currently on the Steering Committee of the IFWA board.
Trundy can usually be seen at Fishermen’s Day cooling shark although this year her task changes since shark was not on the menu.
IFWA works behind the scenes with projects that promote safety, education and in the case of the annual Fishermen’s Day: fun. The organization also raises funds for annual scholarships, helps fund swimming lessons for children and adults, and sponsors CPR and Coast Guard safety classes.
