After watching a slideshow full of memories, photos and song that left few dry eyes in the room, 18 eighth graders from Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School were promoted to high school during a ceremony on June 17 at the Reach Performing Arts Center.
Drama teacher and Reach director John Lincoln served as the guest speaker for the ceremony, and talked about the uniqueness and character of each student.
“Courage is individual, and these guys have a ton of it in their own ways,” said Lincoln.
From courage on the basketball court, to in the classroom to on the river during the class’s rafting trip last week, Lincoln said that he has enjoyed watching the students find their bravery throughout the year as their class advisor.
Lincoln also talked about the friendships the students have formed with each other, and how the size of their class has allowed them the opportunity to get to know each other.
“In my high school, I can’t even remember a classroom having only 18 students in it, let alone in an entire class,” he said. “To have a class this size is special.”
The character of the students, both individually and as a whole, was also addressed in Lincoln’s speech. Their willingness to help, and their selflessness, are two traits he said will take the students far in their future endeavors.
Several teachers presented students with awards for excellence in various subjects. Each award presentation came with personalized congratulations from those teachers, who all said how proud they were not only of who the eighth graders are as students, but also as people.
“Thank you for giving us the opportunity to teach your children every day,” said science teacher Mickie Flores. “It has been our honor.”
The graduating class was made up of Jonah Brages, Macey Brown, Taytum Chase, Gavin Eaton, Colton Harriman, Cody Hendrixon, Kiersten Heroux, Hallie Hudson, Brooklyn Jones, Marlaina Jones, Grace McGuire, Judson Nevells, Christopher Shahan, Treben Snowman, Vanessa VanVorce, Taylor Wiberg and Daya Willette. Graduating in absentia was Trace Brophy.
