Fourth of July festivities ready to go on the island
“Circus is coming to town”
by Faith DeAmbrose
The Circus is coming to town—or specifically to Deer Isle’s annual July 4th parade where it serves as this year’s overarching theme.
The official parade start time is 10 a.m. from Deer Isle village.
A variety of events will be held throughout the day, beginning with the annual Stonington 6 road race and fun run. The race begins at the Island Community Center. Pick up your bib at 6:30 a.m., race begins at 7 a.m. Register at eventbrite.com/o/19994507633.
The Deer Isle/Sunset Congregational Church will host the Oasis Café at the Church property on Route 15 during the parade. The café will feature crab rolls, sandwiches, baked goods and cold beverages, shade and a bathroom. In keeping with this year’s circus theme, it will be held in a “big top” tent.
From one fleet to another, this year the parade will feature the “lobster boat” unit of the Anah Shrine, supported by the area’s local fishermen who helped bring the unit to the island.
Evening events begin at 5 p.m. at the Stonington Fish Pier. There will be food options as well as music by Palomino with Derrick and the Diggers and a magic show by Conjuring Carroll where balloon animals are rumored to be given out from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a special magic show at 6:30 p.m.
Want to dunk a cop? There is an activity for that, too. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office will team up with the Marine Patrol to take turns sitting in a dunk tank to raise money for the Christmas is for Kids program.
Fireworks will take place over Stonington Harbor at 9:15 p.m.
