Organization announces dates for roadside clean-up
Planning meeting set for March 12
While snow and ice along the island’s roads are still evident, residents know that spring will come to reveal green leaves and winter’s collection of roadside litter.
Clean Island Partners, a community organization started in 2016 with sponsorship from Island Heritage Trust, has announced in a release that a community-wide spring roadside cleanup will be held Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28. To organize the clean-up, the organization is having a planning meeting open to all island residents at the Deer Isle Town Hall on Tuesday, March 12, from 4 to 5 p.m. Besides the Deer Isle town manager, there will be representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, Island Shellfish Committee, the Deer Isle Conservation Commission, Evergreen Garden Club, along with many individual residents present.
Using a big map to locate the trouble spots, individuals and groups will be invited to take responsibility for a particular stretch of road. If you are unable to attend, but would like to offer suggestions or volunteer, call Ann Hooke at 348-6933, Cathy Hart at 348-6679, or Paul Miller at IHT 348-2455.
Island Heritage Trust and the Maine Department of Transportation will supply large plastic bags and orange safety vests. They will be made available 7 to 10 days before the cleanup.
