CSD Board finalizes proposed budget
Public meeting May 9
by Tevlin Schuetz
The school board and superintendent will share details regarding education expenses for 2019-20 at a budget review meeting at the Reach auditorium on Thursday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m.
The CSD board signed off on the budget during their monthly meeting on May 1.
The education budget proposed by Union 76 Superintendent Chris Elkington totals $6,788,696, up $98,229 or 1.46 percent from the current year.
“This budget continues to make improvements in our instructional programming allowing CSD administration and staff to continue to work at improving what we do for students, staff, parents and our community,” Elkington wrote in a recent communication to Deer Isle Selectmen.
The school administration also seeks to add $150,000 to the maintenance reserve account, which will bring it to $220,079 for 2019-20. Voters approved $100,000 last year for major painting projects, and $70,000 is left over since the work has been done by school maintenance personnel and has not been contracted out, Elkington said during the May 1 meeting.
Food service costs are anticipated to rise to $207,476, of which the towns will cover $77,026 in additional funding, up $9,105 or 13 percent from 2018-19.
The Adult Education budget is slated to rise by 26.4 percent to total $104,997 for 2019-20.
“I am very happy to say that this program continues to offer more and more services and is growing,” Elkington stated in a recent email to Island Ad-Vantages. Increased funding of $22,909 from the state, grants and other sources—including $13,416 from Brooklin and Sedgwick, who are joining the program—will limit the increase to $5,770 to the residents of the Island, he said.
The CSD Board approved the proposed addition of a special education tuition reserve of $60,000, to soften the blow of any unforeseen costs accompanying special needs students new to the district.
The district budget meeting will be held on Monday, June 3, at 7 p.m., in the high school gymnasium.
The CSD Board’s next regular meeting follows on Tuesday, June 4, at 5:30 p.m., in the high school cafeteria.
