Luchini wins re-election to state Senate
Beats Republican Langley

by Leslie Landrigan

Democrat Louie Lucchini prevented Republican Brian Langley from returning to the state Senate by beating him by a margin of 13,959 to 11,617 in the November 3 election.

Luchini’s victory helps the Democratic Party retain control of state government. Democrats hold the governor’s office, the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Luchini in a phone interview said he’s honored to return to Augusta and humbled by the support he received.

“The top priority will be to try to navigate the pandemic,” he said. “I think the Legislature will play a much larger role, which I fully support. He wasn’t sure, though, how lawmakers would meet during the pandemic—in the Statehouse, by Zoom or at the civic center.

“We have to find the right balance between protecting the public health while we rebuild the economy,” he said.

Luchini, who has served one term in the Senate, was a track star who now coaches the Ellsworth High School cross country team.

Both candidates are from Ellsworth. The district also includes Blue Hill, Brooklin, Brooksville, Deer Isle, Sedgwick, Stonington, Surry and 21 other communities.

All vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Maine Secretary of State.
