Island-wide Fourth of July celebration makes its return

After a one-year hiatus, the Deer Isle-Stonington Fourth of July celebration will make its return with festivities kicking-off in the afternoon on Sunday, July 4. After the COVID pandemic canceled the island-wide event last year, organizers have worked to find a way to bring it back and ensure the safety of both communities and guests.

The event’s organizers are excited to announce a few changes, including the time of the traditional parade. According to a news release, this year’s parade will begin promptly at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, in Deer Isle village. Those interested in participating in the parade with a float, antique car, or as walkers may contact parade organizer Suzy Shepard at 367-5855 or message her on Facebook.

The parade’s theme will be “Happy Belated Birthday, Maine,” in recognition of last year’s bicentennial celebration. This year’s Grand Marshal will be Deer Isle resident and 2020 Miss Maine Teen USA, Grace Morey. The holiday weekend will also include the Stonington Six, a virtual walk/run to support the Island Community Center. Registration and details can be found at

Following the parade, the commercial fish pier in Stonington will host a variety of food trucks and an evening of music beginning at 5:00 p.m. Performances include a local band, Along for the Ride, and an Elvis impersonator. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display off the harbor set to start at 9:15 p.m.

Because a vaccine is not yet available for young children, event organizers made the difficult decision to remove children’s activities from the pier this year. Instead, the Island Community Center is organizing a children’s activity for families. Details will be announced soon.

Event organizers will also put safeguards in place to help protect event goers, including hand sanitizing stations at each event location and providing masks for those would like one. Additional events and information will be added to the schedule in the coming weeks as they are confirmed and will be made available on the Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Volunteers needed to support Island Nursing Home parade

Island Nursing Home is seeking participants for an Independence Day parade on Saturday, July 3. Organizers ask that Islanders start thinking now about how to help residents celebrate the holiday. Floats, dress up, cars and other entries are invited to line up at the Deer Isle-Stonington High School at 9 a.m. on the 3rd; the parade will begin at 10.
